(Cedric Beal) For everything there is a season and this is my season to ignite change. Even when the current troubles in this world give you so many reasons to feel down and frown, there is always a reason to smile. One of my reasons to smile is my baby brother who is 5 years old. It is very easy to be complacent in achieving small variations of success. For 13 years, I was an only child and all I ever wanted to be was a big brother. Thankfully that opportunity came and my brother keeps me on my toes. My baby brother does not allow me to be complacent in ANYTHING. When I played football in high school if rushed for 200 yards and did not score he was not satisfied nor happy. He makes sure to inform me when I am lacking and remember he's only 5 years old. He holds me accountable. Now that responsibility shifts from scoring touchdowns to making the world a better place for him and other kids to live in. Having an impact on the younger generation brings me great joy. I am extremely happy knowing that I will not only achieve, but also surpass my many goals that I've defined by being a humanitarian and building up the confidence, success, and achievements of black communities.
(Jahi Flowers) Over the years I have always wondered what truly makes me happy. And now that I’m getting asked that question I have come to the conclusion that what makes me happy is being able to inspire or lift others up. Even though my family, friends, and things I like to do for fun give me a since of happiness. Nothing on this Earth gives me that deep sense of satisfaction like inspiring or motivating people to make a difference or be a better person that they were the day before. This is because when I was younger my mom always made sure that I was being the best person I could be and I can still remember when she use to tell me that there will be a day when I will have to pick between what is right and what is easy. She would always tell me to pick what was right while pushing me through hard times to continue to be motivated and pick people up along the way. This huge piece of inspiration not only helped me to find success in some very unique places but also helped me become the person I am today. Which is why inspiring others and motivating them to be the best that they can be is not only what makes me happy, it’s what gives me purpose.
(Amari Kendall) When I think of what makes me happy, I become conflicted with multiple experiences and things but of the them all it’s bringing happiness to others around me. Rather that’s to a stranger on the streets of Chicago, a neighbor in my community or even someone who is close to me, I try to make a positive difference. When I think of my contributions to those I’ve affected, I remember how words are the strongest asset that we hold as human beings. For example, I’m currently mentoring a young African American boy who comes from the englewood area, an impoverished neighborhood in Chicago, and he lives in a defense mechanized mindset to always be combative and defiant to his elders. As we go through our everyday routine, I’ve witnessed his change by the different activities and conversations we have, he’s changing and growing out of that mindset. Even though he’s only 10 years old, it starts early and it’s imperative that he learns how to navigate through life now rather than later when it’s to late and there’s limited opportunities. By giving someone my words of wisdom that have been passed down to me fulfills my vison in making a change in my community and these experiences give me a purpose. Affecting others in a positive way is what makes me happy.
Happiness is such a philosophical term that when I think of it I cannot help but think of single moments or experiences that brought me joy but thinking on a broader scale, what makes me happy is not experiences that I have had but positive experiences I have given and will give others. My passion for helping people around me is what drives me daily. For example, a program I started while in high school named Extend the Nest gave me the opportunity to help younger students daily with resources that ensure future success. Having this amount of impact on people is so important to me and plays a big role in how I interact with others on a day to day basis. Having the chance to affect my surroundings for the better is ultimately what makes me happy.
One of the many things that makes me happy is being of service to others. During my Junior Year in High School, I was part of a club called Painters of Promise, and we essentially were allowed to paint murals on our school campus. We were given the chance to paint a mural at an elementary school nearby. We gave the kids a quick preview before the finished product, and their faces just glowed up. I found that seeing other people happy from what I did or by helping contribute had brought me joy. This club allowed me to create something that speaks volumes when observed by the human eye and also made me realized that I am a fan of all forms of art. This club also taught me that I can find joy from helping others in any way! not only by painting murals.
Living in a society that poses so many defeats, one must find something that makes them happy. Something that keeps a smile on our face. The thing that makes me happy is writing. I have learned to write about many situations that I know I may not be able to change. The fact that I cannot change an issue is what makes me write. I write about my problems, potential solutions, and my frustrations. By writing, I am able to escape my problems temporarily and live in my imagination. Even though writing makes my happy, I have learned that I’m not a good one. Though my writing skills are lack luster, my happiness isn’t. The happiness I receive by releasing pinned up energy, frustration, and negativity far exceeds any amount of money. What’s the point of having money and not being happy?
Nothing makes me happier than enjoying the world around me with my loved ones. To me, family is one of the most important things in my life. I would not be the man I am today if it weren’t for those individuals in my life, (blood-relative or not) that showed me unconditional love and support no matter the circumstance. Living as a young black male in America, it is pertinent that as long as we continue to be labeled as “a young black male in America”, we are able to have a strong support system backing us and leading us in the right direction. I understand that many others don’t have this same privilege as I, which is why I am so grateful. However, my happiness does not come solely from the love I have for my family, but it also stems from the help and joy I give to others.
For as long as I can remember I have never been afraid to raise my hand in the classroom. Often to the dismay of my peers, my questions would lead to long extraneous discussion about whatever topic me and the instructor were currently delving into. I found that from a young age I immensely enjoyed learning new things, from random facts about history, to advanced mathematics, simply learning something new made me happy. I have kept that voracious curiosity over the years and it has only seemed to mature with age
Stories of triumph make me happy. The idea that one person or group can succeed despite every obstacle plagued against them is beautiful. I love meeting people with these kinds of stories because they give me the energy to keep going. Sometimes life seems too challenging or makes me feel inferior, but when I think back to the woman who found the strength to leave her abuser or the man who left his 9-5 to live his dream I know that no matter what challenge comes my way I can handle it. These stories assure me that I’m not alone and I want to do that for other people. This is how we make the world a better place, by opening ourselves to share truth, wisdom, and vulnerability.
Being able to help others makes me happy. Helping other people warms my heart to know I am making a change in someone life that needs support. I've been this way for my whole life. But ever since my trip to Guatemala last summer my happiness of helping others has increase . Staying in a local village that was poverty stricken you start to appreciate what you have at home. I saw I complained a lot about stuff but while doing community service in Guatemala I saw that building a road for the community made me smile everyday building. Whatever I'm doing helping other people will always be something I cherrish and puts a smile on my face.

(Dre'Quan Chisholm)Something that makes me happy is being able to help others. When I was younger I always watched my mom and grandmother help others in need. My grandmother has taken in many kids and raised them as her own. My mother and I started this ministry we do where we feed those that are hungry. I find happiness in providing a meal to someone because I feel no one should have to struggle for a meal. When i was younger there’s been nights where there wasn’t a home cooked meal on the table and my only meal came from school. The feeling that I had no one should have to bear. Out of everything that life throws at a person eating should be the least of their concern. So being able to give someone or a family a sense of relief for that day with a meal is what gives me happiness.
