I am Joshua McCalla, a junior kinesiology major from Decatur, Georgia. I am a third generation Morehouse College student, and I serve as the sophomore class coordinator. A question that each and everyone should think about coming into Morehouse is:
How will you mold this opportunity of attending Morehouse College to become the best version of yourself?

Morehouse is definitely about to be one of the greatest tools that I have ever used for me, as in my whole persona. Me personally, I have been in the hood all of my life, however this is not what I see for myself through a greater perspective. Although the brotherhood and the unity are two continued things emphasized, I look forward to improving on my professionalism. As I grow older, I realize that I will have to begin speaking my mind right and improving on the way I carry myself in the real world. I knew that Morehouse would be the right place to be while transitioning to true adulthood, to set me up for life. The hood doesn’t define me, and Morehouse will be my aid to demonstrate the truth of this statement.
Everyday I try to grow and better myself. One thing that I have learned throughout high school is that you become who you hang around. When I get to Morehouse I will continue to surround myself with people who have creative and diverse minds. I know for a fact that there are multiple people who can add to me and I can add to them as well. We can share ideas, discuss the future and work in the present. I look forward to growing at Morehouse college by becoming a better man, student, and server. I am really glad that I have many brothers who will also hold me accountable to that.
What's up Joshua. To answer your question, I like to reflect on my past...mostly I ponder about my years in high school. I think about everything, all the mistakes and failed exams, and I think about what I could have done differently or could have improved on. So right now, I am thinking about my senior year and is evaluating how I conducted myself throughout the year. I tried to look at what I did from an objective view, but I never had the chance to get another point of view. So, I already have a plan for this upcoming year based off of what I did last year; any scenario I may have seen already, I would be prepared for it. Attending Morehouse,I plan to communicate more with others more, those who may have been in a similar predicament, hopefully, I can get a new view because I will always do what's best for me, but it would not hurt to get another perspective. Furthermore, the evaluting process will not stop; at the end of the first semester I will be thinking about what I could do better as well as getting feedback from others and apply what I learned so I can strive.
(Jahi Flowers) To be entirely honest, if someone were to ask me this question about 3 months ago I won’t have been able to answer it. But today after many months of considering why I’m going to Morehouse and what I want to achieve by going there. It has been made clear to me that this opportunity to attend Morehouse will allow instill in me a new sense of humility and respect that is a big portion of how I envision my “Best Self” being. This is evident, due to past hardships that really made me reconsider my future and whether I was going to have what it took to achieve my goals. I am certain that I will mold my personal Morehouse College journey as an expirence to not only make a difference around me but to make a difference within myself. Which will only push me to be the best person I can be while being around people, who are equally as motivated ,driven to achieve success and willing to make some monumental changes in the world one decision at a time.
What drew me to Morehouse was hearing an alumnus say that being at Morehouse was like iron sharpening iron. Which amazed me because often what had been depicted to me about college was a fight to see who would come out on top, not a group of people working together to reach the top. I want to take this opportunity to use the faculty and students around me to exceed in being well read, well spoken, and well traveled. There are some sharp brothers and sisters in the AUC and I’m looking forward to being challenged by them. I believe that at Morehouse I can enhance my leadership skills by being active on campus. If I take all the opportunities granted to me I know that I can come out of Morehouse as my best self, a focused young man who understands the importance of brotherhood and can articulate himself exquisitely.
Before I started my senior year of high school Morehouse wasn't even a school I was planning on applying to. Due to some great Morehouse Alumni In my life, I started to dig into the college. I came and saw the greatest of what was happening in this culturally significant location and knew I needed to be here in the fall. Morehouse College will allow me to grow in a multifaceted way through my matriculation through the school. I hope Morehouse will give me a greater understanding as an African American Man. Morehouse is also a place of academic rigor. I plan to study Business Finance at Morehouse’s illustrious business school. Morehouse is also in the city of Atlanta which has so many opportunities for anything you could imagine. I also hope to grow spiritually at Morehouse. Morehouse offers classes and many platforms for me to focus on my spirituality. Morehouse is a special place with a great number of opportunities and I hope to grow as a young black male there.
The decision between doing what you love and doing what is going to make you money is always a difficult one. I believe attending Morehouse College will put me around individuals and into spaces that will give the opportunity to decipher whether there is a difference between the two or not. Meeting the right people will allow me to find what my passion is and run with it rather than researching the highest paying jobs and striving for that. Morehouse will be that stepping stone for my maturity mentally and a place that my network can become not just larger but also more positive.
I think by me choosing to attend Morehouse, not only am I defying the odds but creating advantageous opportunities for myself. Of course Morehouse has a long history of molding Black men into what they intend to be, that is not the representation to mainstream society. Many perceive Black men as dangerous unproductive members of society. Despite the many successful Black men there are in America, the media would rather focus on the negative. I think choosing to go to Morehouse will help me to become a part of that group of successful Black men. I know that may seem like a typical answer, but it is a truthful one. I can go to any school and leave successful but I chose to attend Morehouse to be around a brotherhood of Black men becoming better. More specifically, I will use attending Morehouse as a way to challenge myself to become greater and not settle for less. I will be able to see the success around me and want to be a part of it.
I was afforded the opportunity to attend Morehouse at a heavily reduced rate, I recognize that this is an especially prestigious university with an exemplary history and an exceptional number of alumni with figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Spike Lee and Samuel L. Jackson at the top of te list. The name Morehouse is also not taken lightly. In communities that recognize Morehouse's prestige they refer to it with a sense of awe and revere, a few have even referred to it as the "Black Harvard."
I will use the prestige that comes with attending Morehouse to widen my job prospects and network in the places that are recommended to me or that I feel will provide me with the best opportunities.
Attending Morehouse will also give me the chance to be surrounded by strong men of color who can be role models for me and assist me in my growth. Currently I do not have many positive male role models who are interested in the same things as I am, I hope this will change when I go to Morehouse.
As I continue to progress throughout my everyday life, I try to grow and evolve to make the next day better than the one before. Having this opportunity to attend Morehouse College gives me countless opportunities to network with outgoing young men who want to seek change in our communities and build off each other’s ideas to make a difference. I’m extremely excited to grow into the young man everyone around me envisions me to be, but it’s up to me to tackle that challenge and with Morehouse, I can do anything. I couldn’t imagine attending another school and I plan on taking full advantage of what’s been presented to me, along with developing into manhood with my fellow brothers.
Each day as I continue to grow, I think about who I want to be and the steps I can take to become that person. Attending Morehouse and becoming a Bonner scholar was at the top of my list for my first initial steps. I intend to use this opportunity to mold myself into a man of Morehouse who is able to actively practice servant-leadership while also having developed enough confidence and character to make a positive impact on everyone I come into contact with.
While attending Morehouse I would use these next four years to focus on two aspects of myself. Those two aspects are communication, and professionalism. By attending different on and off campus events I can network and meet different people. Different internships would help with my professionalism by giving me the opportunity to witness other professionals in action. Overall being able to be around like minded individuals that are striving to a common goal is motivation to be the best me there is.
Morehouse College was the best fit for me in a development stand point. At Morehouse I look to developed my networking skills, communication and professionalism skills. Morehouse has a great depth of Alumni and students that I can connect with to make my time at Morehouse valuable. Networking can allowed me to have the best future possible and at Morehouse college I think this skill can get developed efficiency. With Communication and Professionalism, Morehouse is a staple for Brotherhood and excelling young black men. Going to Morehouse will allow me build these skills so that I can be successful in the future.
