Meet Torryn Carter, Freshmen Class Coordinator

I am Torryn Carter, a sophomore, Political Science major from Louisville, KY. My Bonner site this past academic year was KIPP Strive, a local middle school in which I spent time mentoring students and helping out faculty of the school.

I serve as the Freshmen Class Coordinator and I look forward to implementing more service initiatives to greater impact the AUC Community and the West End of Atlanta.

Question: What one skill would you like to improve & what is your plan for doing so?

One of my favorite skills is the skill to create peace wherever I go. This is definitely one that I need to work on especially with the chaos that we have in the black community. Last year I went to New Orleans Louisiana to volunteer at a football camp in the Treme Projects. So many kids were ready to fight each other for no reason. My team mates and I had to pick one kid up because he was dragging a little girl by her hair. I was able to soothe most of the situations by making the kids talk it out, shake hands, and proceed to having fun. I will work on this skill by simply going out into the world and persuading people to talk it out and love each other. The future is always bright when love is present.

I wish to improve my social life and improving my character in a more matured and professional way. I can be seen as an introvert sometimes, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I grew to appreciate my time alone, however being around people should also be enjoyable and productive as well. I want to become more matured because it would be the best attribute while making decisions on situations that may be beneficial to me and then the professionalism will lead me and guide me properly through many different opportunities. In order to achieve these improvements I must become more open to new things such as social events, workshops, and taking on the Morehouse ways, which I am more than ready to do.

(Jahi Flowers) A skill that I was always proud of myself for having was the ability to be open and understanding to all people. But if there is one skill that I need to improve on it’s the ability to use my openness and understanding to be a better leader in my community( back home) and at Morehouse. I plan to improve my leadership by being involved in student life more than I was in highschool and get to know individuals from all walks of life while in the AUC so that I will be able to apply my previous knowledge from Indiana to living in Atlanta where things are entirely different. But with that being said,I will let Morehouse craft me into the kind of Man that is constantly seeking to improve himself in all that I personally need to work on.

One skill I wish to improve on is my communication skills, and there is many areas that I fo not strive in which effect the way I communicate. Being a great communicator consist of being clear when speaking, a good listener and being objective etc. I want to improve as much as I can while being in a space surrounded by other students. This skill is valuable to me because I believe that this can be useful in any industry as well as making a first impression. I plan to work in each area of communication(listening, body language, feedback etc.) While attending Morehouse.

A skill I want to strengthen is my ability to think swiftly and make good last minute decisions. The ability to think on my toes under pressure is important for successfully completing tasks efficiently. In some cases, unexpected events can occur that needs a leader to be able to maneuver and quickly make decisions that will still ensure a successful completion of events. I believe this talent is crucial in life and useful in all areas. If I can strengthen this I will be very satisfied with my skill set.

A skill I would like to improve on is my ability to be more open towards people. If I do not know a person that well, I tend to be standoffish or anti-social. This is mainly because I do not like to show my full personality to someone I barely know. When put in these situations, I usually keep to myself and only interact with those I am comfortable with. In hopes of trying to combat this, I have been more willing to talk to people I don't know. Working at a restaurant has helped me in my interaction skills with people. In a way it forces one to have conversations that may be awkward initially, but will lead to greater results. My plan to solve this is to interact with people I have less in common, which would cause me to be more open. Someone who has no interest as me would lead me to basically tell all my interests and hear theirs. My email is Keith.Brown@morehouse.edu

One area I would like to see myself work on is my patience. I recently worked in the field of retail over the summer, and due to other factors in people's life I saw how their patience was running thin. I was oblivious in many aspects to this lack of patience people portrayed, and I asked myself introspectively if I was apart of the problem. After reflecting on this quorum I determined I needed to change. I had determined that I became impatience and upset with people who I felt like weren't matching the level of energy I expect or people who march to the beat of their own drum. Instead of getting stressed by these type of people I talk to them and understand their circumstances. Learning about their situation will sometimes lead to growth within whether that be tangible or spiritual.

One skill that I’m sure to improve on as a Boner scholar is balance. I would like to be able to have great (not just good) grades as well as a social life and presence on campus. I think the key to this is time management. If I map out everything that needs to be done at the beginning of the week and kill my procrastination I’ll be able to maintain my grades and have fun. A skill I would like to improve is my inability to thoroughly execute my thoughts. I’m often times seen as an extremely impulsive person, it isn’t often I plan out events in a complete fashion. Ways I am going to correct my impulsiveness as a Boner scholar is to communicate my ideas to an exterior source, writing my thoughts out or even creating a list of pros and cons to effectively get my vision understood. I plan to have a beneficial impact om Morehouse’s campus by being active and engaged with my peers to have a great experience. My Morehouse email is Amari.Kendall@morehouse.edu

One skill I would like to improve at Morehouse College would be my studying habits. In high school I rarely studied, I relied on my knowledge to get good grades on test. I know in college I cannot do that studying is a key to being successful in college. I need to improve on my studying to be successful. To do this I will look to have independence in my studies. I think I do not work well with a group but staying indolence and studying for a long time I THINK I CAN IMPROVE this skill while at Morehouse. Elmer.Ellis@morehouse.edu

One skill I would like to improve upon as I matriculate throughout college is my networking ability. As a student in the auc I understand how important it is to make meaningful connections and I really feel like if I am able to perfect this skill then it will open me up to a lot more opportunities. As for my plan to do so, everyday I will go out and around the auc campus and meet new groups of people to become familiar with my surroundings and who I am goin to school with.

One skill I want to work on is communication. Ways I can help improve that at Morehouse is joining different organizations and being active on campus. I’m started a YouTube channel so filming around campus and getting other Morehouse brother to be apart is one of the main ways I am going to improve this skill.
